On Wednesday 14th May 2014, Black History Studies in association with CHANYA Culture Promotions hosted a presentation on ‘The Birth of the Blues’ By Corey Harris.
The presentation highlighted the individual art of playing, singing and composing the blues and how the blues is a language that different players and instruments can use to create a collaborative performance. Corey Harris demonstrated a concept of the blues that includes other types of Black music (reggae, ska, jazz) in the west that originated in Africa. He also spoke on the contributions and similarities of Malian and other West African music’s to the blues will be highlighted.
We had a brilliant time listening to the presentation and watching him sing and play his guitar. He has inspired me to complete some research into Blues artists that I was not unaware of. He such a beautiful man and was inspired by the fact that he home-schools his children.
On the night, Corey Harris introduced his new book Jahtigui: The Life and Music of Ali Farka Toure which examines the life and music of the Malian music legend Ali Farka Toure. I was happy that all the books that he brought with him sold out at the end of the night.
I would like to say a big thank you to Naomi Reid of CHANYA Promotions for giving us this opportunity. Thank you to everyone who came down and supported this event. One Love!
